Do printed names and numbers crack or peel?

Done correctly, no — a pressed name and number should outlast the jersey in normal use. When it does fail, the cause is nearly always identifiable, and it is nearly always one of five things. Here they are, along with the recipe that avoids them.

Recipe

Time, temperature, pressure — in that order of neglect

A heat-applied graphic is an adhesive bond. Three variables control it, and the one most people underweight is pressure.

Temperature. Most polyester jersey fabric lives in a band around 285–320°F. Sublimated garments sit at the low end so the dye stays where it belongs. Cotton-poly happily takes the top end. The number matters less than whether the platen is actually delivering it — presses drift, and a press that reads 310 and delivers 280 across one corner will produce a batch that fails in a month.

Dwell. Ten to fifteen seconds covers most jersey stock. Lower temperature usually means longer dwell, not the same dwell at a cooler setting.

Pressure. Firm and even. On mesh and textured knits this is the whole ballgame: the adhesive has to be driven into the knuckles of the knit rather than laid across the top of it. Light pressure produces a graphic that looks perfect leaving the station and lifts at a corner after two washes. On a jersey with an existing seam or crest near the print area, a thin foam pad under the garment evens out the field.

The peel. Films are engineered as hot peel or cold peel and they are not interchangeable. Pulling a cold-peel film hot lifts the edge of the graphic before the adhesive has set. That lifted edge is the crack you will see three months later.

Failure

The five things that actually cause it

  1. Under-pressure. The most common cause by a distance, and the hardest to spot on the day, because an under-pressed transfer looks identical to a correct one for about a fortnight.
  2. A contaminated fabric face. Silicone softeners, anti-static sprays and some manufacturing finishes sit between the adhesive and the fibre. If supplied garments were laundered before they reached us, that is worth telling us, because it changes what we test for.
  3. Wrong peel timing. Covered above. It lifts an edge, and edges unzip.
  4. Hot laundry. Hot wash plus high tumble dry is repeated thermal cycling of the exact bond you just made. It will not destroy a good application quickly, but it ages it fast, and it will finish off a marginal one.
  5. Stretching it hot. The adhesive is still mobile for a short while after the press opens. A guest who pulls a jersey straight over their head in the first minute can shear the bond before it has set. This is why finished garments go to a handoff table rather than straight into hands.

Note what is not on that list: the method itself. Full-colour DTF on a calibrated press is a durable, stretch-tolerant bond. Nearly every failure traces to process, and process is controllable.

Care

The card we would put in every jersey

  • Wait 24 hours after the event before the first wash.
  • Turn it inside out. This alone does most of the work — it stops the print abrading against the drum and against other garments.
  • Cold water, gentle cycle, no bleach.
  • No fabric softener. It coats fibres, and it will eventually get under a graphic edge.
  • Hang dry where possible, tumble dry low if not. Heat is the enemy of a heat-set bond.
  • Never iron directly on the print. Inside out, or a cloth over it.

For a guest jersey handed out at an activation, that is more care than most garments will ever receive, and the print will survive the neglect. For a team kit going into a season of weekly washes, it is worth printing on the handoff card.

What we do so it does not come up

Before doors, we test press a garment from the actual run — not a similar garment, not last year's stock — and we check the peel and give it a stretch and a scratch while it is still in front of us. That test sets the recipe for the day.

During the run, operators inspect every jersey after peel rather than after the guest has walked. A lifted corner caught at the press is a re-press. A lifted corner caught at home is an email. Presses get re-checked across a long day because platens drift as they heat-cycle, and a four-hour activation is a long day for a press.
